This symbol is a yarmulke. It is also know as a kippah. The Arabic meaning for the kippah is "fear the king." It is mostly worn by men, but is sometimes worn by women. In Isreal, if you are not wear a kippah, it is like saying "i'm not religious. wearing this is very important. It shows your respect for Judaism.
